KOBE IN THE PHILIPPINES, 1998
In 1998, as an NBA Lockout pushed the start of the season, Kobe visited the Philippines draped in Adidas stripes, and attended a Philippine Basketball Association Finals game.
At halftime, Kobe was given some sort of Black Eyed Peas rock concert headset to make an announcement, at which time a brazenly drunken Filipino man begged Kobe to dunk “just once.”
Kobe not only obliged the dunk request, he broke out every 1998 playground move he could think of, again, covered head to toe in Adidas’ finest black satin. In typical Kobe fashion, he hits a long jumper just before leaving the court to raucous applause.
And one last reminder: this was all at a halftime of a PBA Finals game.

MUST WATCH: ‘90’s Flashback - NBC’s Hang Time with special guest star, Kobe Bryant
Sure, you could just watch this clip, have a good ‘ol laugh, and head back to the rest of your day, but you’d be missing out. You’d miss out on context, plot, and moving story telling. Allow me…
Three street toughs have found their way into Deering High School, and have snookered three members of the Deering High Tornadoes basketball team into a game. But this isn’t any old game. This game…is for money.
You see, these street toughs are what’s known as hustlers, or hustlaz in contemporary parlance. Down 10-6 in a game to 11, things go from bad to worse for our Deering High protagonists when their plain, white center goes down with a wrist injury, leaving only female basketball sensation, Julie Connor (played by Daniella Deutscher) and their fat power forward, Teddy Broadis (played by the incomparable, Anthony Anderson).
The hustlaz force Julie and Teddy to either finish the game, playing a man down, or pay off the bet. Were it not for the intervention of DHS varsity basketball coach, Bill Fuller (played by the Sacramento Kings’ Reggie Theus), our teens would surely be in trouble.
Luckily, Coach Fuller knows…The Black Mamba.
You’re welcome.
